Edge computing moves computation from a few central data centers to many locations close to users. A visitor in Chandigarh gets a response from a node in India instead of a server in Virginia. Fewer miles of network mean lower latency, and the delay you save on every request adds up across a page load.
What "the edge" means
The term covers several layers:
- CDN edge: hundreds of points of presence run by Cloudflare, Fastly, Akamai, AWS CloudFront and others, which cache content and now execute code.
- Edge functions: small programs deployed to those points, such as Cloudflare Workers, Vercel Edge Functions, Netlify Edge Functions and Lambda@Edge.
- On-device and on-premises edge: computing on phones, gateways or factory machines, common in IoT.
This article focuses on the web-oriented layers.
Why latency matters
Each round trip between browser and server costs time determined by distance and network quality. Secure connections need several round trips before the first byte of content arrives. Terminating TLS and serving cached responses at a nearby node trims that setup time, and it improves Time to First Byte and Largest Contentful Paint.
Workloads that fit the edge
- Caching and static delivery: HTML, images, scripts and API responses served from the nearest node.
- Redirects and rewrites: country-based routing and legacy URL mapping without a trip to the origin.
- Authentication checks: verifying a signed token or cookie before a request reaches your application.
- A/B tests and personalization: choosing a variant at the edge so the page stays cacheable.
- Bot filtering and rate limiting: stopping bad traffic close to its source.
- Image resizing and format conversion on demand.
- Light API composition: combining a few fast upstream calls.
// Cloudflare Worker: route by country
export default {
async fetch(request) {
const country = request.cf?.country;
if (country === "IN") {
return Response.redirect("https://example.com/in", 302);
}
return fetch(request);
},
};
Limits to know
- Constrained runtimes. Many edge platforms run V8 isolates, not full Node.js. Some Node APIs, native modules and large dependencies do not work.
- Tight resource caps. CPU time, memory and bundle size are small compared with a regional server.
- Database distance. An edge function that queries a database in one region may be slower than a function placed beside the database. Latency to the data matters more than latency to the user in that case.
- Consistency. Replicated state at many locations is eventually consistent. Do not use the edge for logic that needs strict, immediate consistency.
- Debugging. Reproducing a problem at one of hundreds of locations is harder than on a single server.
Edge-friendly data
Data stores built for global access reduce the distance problem: Cloudflare KV and D1, Durable Objects, Turso, PlanetScale read replicas, Upstash Redis and DynamoDB global tables. Choose them for read-heavy data such as feature flags, configuration and product catalogs. Keep writes to a primary region unless your design handles conflicts.
Edge rendering for frameworks
Next.js, Remix, SvelteKit and Astro can render some routes at the edge. Static generation with incremental revalidation, served from a CDN, delivers most of the benefit with fewer constraints than full edge rendering. Reserve edge runtime for routes that need per-request logic and have light data needs.
Beyond web: IoT and AI
Factories, retail stores and vehicles process sensor data on local gateways to react in milliseconds and reduce bandwidth. Small machine learning models now run on phones and edge devices for tasks like speech recognition and image classification, which keeps personal data on the device.
How to start
- Put a CDN in front of your site and set correct cache headers.
- Measure Time to First Byte by region with real user monitoring.
- Move redirects, header rewrites and token checks into edge middleware.
- Test one personalization or A/B case at the edge.
- Review your data locations before moving heavier logic.
Common questions
Will edge computing make my site rank higher?
It can help indirectly. Faster Time to First Byte and Largest Contentful Paint improve Core Web Vitals, and better experience tends to improve engagement. A CDN with good cache rules delivers most of that benefit before you write any edge code.
Is edge computing more expensive?
Edge platforms usually charge per request and per CPU time, with generous free tiers. Costs stay low for lightweight logic. They can rise if you run heavy computation at the edge that would be cheaper in one region, so measure with production traffic.
Which provider should I pick?
Choose based on where your stack already lives. Cloudflare Workers suit teams that want a global runtime with storage options. Vercel and Netlify integrate best with their framework deployments. Fastly and Akamai serve large enterprises with advanced traffic control. Run a small pilot with real users in your target regions before committing.
